Sustainability Consulting
Measure it first, then decide what to buy
Renewable energy and sustainability consulting for Kentucky businesses that need honest numbers. We estimate electricity emissions with published methods, compare your renewable options and help you report what you can actually claim.
Carbon & Scope 2 Reporting takes 3–6 weeks for the first year and less in later years. Supplier Sustainability Questionnaires take 2–4 weeks.Flat fee, in writingNo commissions, ever
The idea
Emissions accumulate like limestone: drop by drop, invisible until someone measures.
What renewable energy and sustainability consulting means in Kentucky
A limestone cave grows its formations one drop at a time, and nobody notices until someone holds up a lantern and a tape measure. Electricity emissions work the same way. Our renewable energy and sustainability consulting starts with the measuring: estimate emissions from the power you buy, using published methods. Then we compare the ways a Kentucky business can buy, build or contract for renewable power, and help you report what you can honestly claim.
The work covers renewable-energy adoption research, sustainability planning, non-certified environmental impact estimates, renewable usage tracking, carbon calculations and voluntary sustainability reports. We rely on published methodologies, chiefly the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance and EPA’s eGRID emission factors. We don’t provide third-party verification or assurance, and every deliverable says so.
The questions it answers
What are our emissions from purchased electricity, by site and by year?
Which renewable option changes the number our customers actually ask about?
After we buy it, what can we claim, and in what words?
What will customers, lenders or the board ask next year, and is our data ready?
Why it matters in Kentucky in 2026
Customers are asking. Kentucky assembles vehicles in Georgetown, Louisville and Bowling Green, and the state’s bourbon, food and packaging supply chains reach large national brands. Those buyers send emissions questionnaires to their suppliers, and the requests often land at plants that have never measured an emissions figure.
The grid factor deserves attention. EPA recommends eGRID subregion rates for estimating emissions from electricity use. In EPA’s latest release, covering 2023 data, most Kentucky generation falls in the SERC Tennessee Valley (SRTV) subregion, with a smaller share, mostly in eastern and northern Kentucky, in RFC West (RFCW). Which factor applies to a site depends on its serving utility, and EPA’s Power Profiler looks that up.
The rules are being revised. The GHG Protocol is revising its Scope 2 Guidance. Its public consultation ran from October 2025 to January 2026, proposals include hourly matching for voluntary clean energy claims, and full publication of the revised standard is planned for the end of 2027. If you’re about to sign a multi-year renewable contract, ask how it would look under hourly matching.
Green Tariff vs. RECs vs. on-site solar
LG&E and KU business customers have three Green Tariff options, and open-market renewable energy certificates (RECs) and on-site solar are available almost everywhere. They don’t do the same job.
Option
What it is
Location-based Scope 2
Market-based Scope 2
Ask first
Green Tariff Option 1: Green Energy program
RECs bought in blocks on your bill, sourced from Kentucky or bordering states and retired each year; no minimum term
No change
Can lower it, if RECs are retired for you
Will we get retirement records for each year?
Green Tariff Option 2: Business Solar
The utility procures, builds, owns and operates an array at your facility; monthly fee offset by production credits; each project needs PSC approval
Depends on how the array is metered
Depends on who holds the attributes
Who keeps the RECs?
Green Tariff Option 3: Renewable Power Agreement
Special contract for large customers (10 MW minimum) to buy a new renewable generator’s output and attributes; PSC approval required
No change
Can lower it
What happens to price over the term?
Unbundled RECs
Certificates bought separately from power
No change
Can lower it, if they meet quality criteria
What vintage, what market, what certification?
On-site solar you own
Panels behind your meter
Lowers it, by cutting grid purchases
Can lower it, if you keep and retire the RECs
Are the RECs tracked and retired, or sold?
The non-obvious part: only using less grid power, or making your own behind the meter, moves the location-based figure. Certificates and green tariffs change the market-based figure. Customers increasingly ask for both, so a plan built only on certificates can leave one number untouched. Our Green Tariff vs. RECs vs. on-site solar article goes deeper.
Two services, two audiences
Carbon & Scope 2 Reporting builds your own annual inventory: data from bills and interval files, location-based and market-based figures, and a memo you can hand to a board or lender.
Supplier Sustainability Questionnaires answers someone else’s format: a customer portal, a CDP supply chain request or an industry questionnaire. The work centers on a repeatable data file and consistent narrative answers.
A first questionnaire often reveals the need for the inventory underneath it. Priya Venkataraman leads both. If on-site solar is on the table, a Commercial Feasibility Study tests whether it pays.
In this practice
2 ways we can help
3–6 weeks for the first year from complete data; later years are faster because the data file and methods carry forward
An annual, non-certified estimate of emissions from purchased electricity using the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance and EPA eGRID factors, with location-based and market-based results and a methods memo.
Explore Carbon & Scope 2 Reporting
2–4 weeks from complete data, so start as soon as the request arrives
Help for Kentucky suppliers answering customer sustainability questionnaires and portal requests: a repeatable energy and emissions data file, consistent narrative answers and renewable option evaluation.

What you walk away with
Outcomes, not opinions
01
A baseline you can explain
Electricity emissions estimated with named methods and factors, so anyone can follow the math.
02
Options compared on the right axis
Each renewable option is judged by what it actually changes: your bill, your location-based figure or your market-based figure.
03
Claims you can stand behind
Plain guidance on what each purchase supports saying, and what it doesn't.
04
A repeatable process
Data files and methods documented, so next year's update is faster and consistent with this year's.

Where our work stops
Boundaries we keep
Our figures are non-certified estimates; we don't provide third-party verification or assurance.
We don't give legal advice on environmental claims or regulatory filings.
We don't give investment advice on renewable energy contracts, and we don't sell any renewable product.
We don't measure on-site emissions or perform environmental testing.
No. They are non-certified estimates based on published methodologies, such as the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance and EPA eGRID emission factors. If a customer or lender requires third-party verification, we organize the file for an independent verifier.
Will buying RECs lower our emissions?
It lowers your market-based Scope 2 figure if the certificates meet quality criteria and are retired on your behalf. It doesn't change your location-based figure, which reflects the grid where you use power. Many requests now ask for both.
Do you sell RECs or green power?
No. We don't sell any renewable product, and we take no fees from utilities, brokers or developers. We compare the options so you can choose.
Is the GHG Protocol changing?
Yes. It is revising its Scope 2 Guidance, with proposals that include hourly matching for voluntary clean energy claims, and it plans to publish the full revised standard by the end of 2027. Every report we deliver states which version we used.
