About us

We don't sell panels. We don't install. We work for you.

Center For Solar is an independent, fee-only solar advisory firm in Lexington, KY. We help Kentucky households, businesses and farms test an energy decision before they sign anything.

A dry-stone limestone wall with one stone replaced by a perfectly fitted solar cell
The idea

Kentucky's dry-stone fences were built to last without mortar. Good energy decisions work the same way: every piece has to carry its own weight.

Center For Solar is a small advisory firm based in Lexington, KY. We’re paid a flat fee by the people we advise, and by nobody else. We don’t sell equipment, we don’t install it, and we earn nothing when you sign a contract. Our job is to read the proposal, the bill, the lease offer or the monitoring data in front of you, and tell you plainly what it’s worth.

That’s the whole business. It’s narrow on purpose.

Why an independent solar advisor exists in Kentucky

Our principal advisor, Maren Holloway, started the firm after too many conversations with Kentucky homeowners and business owners who had been handed a monthly payment instead of an analysis. The payment was easy to understand. The 25 years behind it rarely were.

Since then, the questions have only gotten harder. Here is what the market looks like in late 2026:

  • The residential tax credit is gone. The federal 30% residential clean energy credit (Section 25D) ended for expenditures made after December 31, 2025. Any homeowner proposal that still counts it deserves a hard second look.
  • More homeowners lease instead of buying. Leases and power purchase agreements are a growing share of residential solar. The comparison is no longer just cash or loan. It’s escalators, buyout schedules, transfer terms and who owns the equipment in year 26.
  • Exported power is worth less than the power you buy. For new net-metering customers at LG&E and KU, Kentucky Power and Duke Energy Kentucky, energy you send back to the grid earns a credit below the retail rate. Many co-ops set their own rules. How much of your production you use at home now matters as much as how much you produce.
  • Some systems have nobody looking after them. Several large residential installers and financiers went bankrupt between 2024 and 2026. The panels kept running. In many cases the monitoring logins, warranty contacts and service plans didn’t. We help owners of those orphaned systems find out what they still have.
  • Farm families are getting lease offers. Developers are mailing long-term solar lease offers for Kentucky farmland and reclaimed land, often for terms of several decades. We compare the commercial and financial terms so the family and its attorney can negotiate from a clear page.
  • Suppliers are being asked about emissions. Kentucky manufacturers and parts suppliers now receive sustainability questionnaires from their customers asking for electricity use, Scope 2 emissions and renewable energy plans.

Each of these decisions has a seller on the other side of the table. Each one deserves someone on yours.

Here’s the assumption we test first, almost every time: a proposal’s “savings” line is really a forecast of two things nobody controls, future utility rates and how long you’ll keep the property. We put both on the page, so you can decide how much to believe them.

What we don’t do, and why that’s the point

We are a non-licensed consulting firm, and we stay inside that line:

  • We don’t do engineering, system design or structural review.
  • We don’t perform electrical work, construction or inspections.
  • We don’t give legal advice or interpret contracts and leases.
  • We don’t give tax, accounting or investment advice.
  • We don’t sign or stamp anything that requires a licensed professional.

These limits aren’t fine print. They’re the reason we can be independent. A company that designs and installs systems has to sell systems to stay in business. We don’t. When you need an engineer, electrician, attorney, CPA or licensed financial adviser, we tell you, and we give you a written list of questions to take with you. Our scope of services spells it out in full, and our independence pledge explains how we’re paid.

What we value

Six habits we hold ourselves to on every project, from a single homeowner proposal to a multi-site portfolio.

02

Show the work

Every report carries an assumptions page: rate escalation, degradation, export credit, how long you'll stay. Change one and you can see what moves.

03

Plain English, real numbers

We write for the person who has to decide, not for another analyst. Numbers beat adjectives, and a clear table beats a long paragraph.

05

"Not now" is a real answer

Sometimes the right move is a smaller system, a new roof first, or waiting a year. We're paid the same either way, so we can say it.
